Major League Baseball (or MLB) season is just around the corner, but we gamers prefer leaving our baseball gloves in the closet. Instead, we’re pumped to learn what this season holds for new, exciting baseball video games and simulations on the PC.

What are some rising stars, debuting titles, and fan favorites making a comeback? Let’s take a look.

Okay, so you’re the proud owner of a gaming PC, but it seems far harder lately to find a good baseball game. Console players have it easy.

Damn PlayStation and their glorious ‘MLB The Show‘ franchise. This is one of those moments where you can actually second-guess your monitor and keyboard set-up.

1. Super Mega Baseball 2

Super Mega Baseball 2 is an awesome arcade-style, casual, laid-back baseball simulator game.

Released in May 2018, the controls of this game are easy to learn – as compared to the grind of PS’s MLB The Show – and it takes a fraction of The Show’s time to complete. You’ll be through the entire season at a balanced pace, without feeling the gameplay drag on.

Sorry, No Slipping Into Kopech’s Baseball Shoes

The only drawback is that SMB2 is an “unlicensed” game – which means you cannot step into Luis Severino’s shoes (New York Yankees) or those of Michael Kopech (Chicago White Sox).

Only in your imagination…

Super Mega Baseball 2 Multiplayer

A major downside of the first game in this series (SMB1) was excluding a multiplayer capability. As such, you couldn’t enjoy the games online with your pals off-season.

Fortunately, the sequel takes a step forward by introducing local as well as online multiplayer modes. These feature various online game types, including head to head, 2v2 and 2vCPU.

The Super Mega Baseball 2 Graphics

The game is no match to MLB The Show in terms of graphics – not even close – but it’s pretty good and unique in its own right.

Quirky and cartoonish, the graphics make the game eye candy worth savoring. The stadium and the way the light reflects around the giant-headed players also give it a home-run quality.

What does Super Mega Baseball 2 do better than MLB The Show? The customizations. Tons of individual settings are available throughout the game, so you can go deeper than ever. For example:

Customize Anything You Like

  • Team jerseys.
  • Team logos.
  • Your lineup.

You can even customize each of your players individually and add elements such as tattoos, beards, and even animations.

You can grab a copy Super Mega Baseball 2 for about $30. With some digging, you will even find it as low as $10.

And the critics love it: On Metacritic, it scores 83/100. On Steam, it has a user rating of 9/10.

2. MVP Baseball 2005

MVP Baseball 2005 is an old-time classic from EA Sports. Back in the day, EA was a highly regarded publisher who developed ‘complete’ games that were worth playing. Yeah, we’re salty.

MVP Baseball 2005 still represents the gold standard in baseball games, despite being over 14 years old. It’s not just any game. It is – what we call – a professional game with a certain learning curve, and it features full Major League Baseball.

The cherry on top is the fact that it’s licensed, which means you can step into the shoes of your favorite teams. It features all 30 teams, all the stadiums, and over 1,000 players who were affiliated with the teams at that time.

There are various gameplay modes to suit each player laying hand on a copy of this game. The exhibition mode allows you to quickly set up a team against other players. The manager mode is a choice-based mode, where players manage the team exclusively instead of actually playing.

Then there’s the Dynasty mode, which allows players to manage and play a team for up to 120 seasons. That’s backed up with the Owner mode, presenting various financial decisions for players to contend with.

The best thing about it? All the modes, players, teams, and everything else came in the box. You didn’t have to buy extra DLC. Ah, the good ol’ days of EA.

When it comes to graphics, the game may seem a bit outdated when we take account of today’s standards. However, back in the day, nothing looked better than this beauty.

It’s safe to say that the game was well-received, having sold 1 million boxes and earned over $29 million within 6 months of release.

It received the award of Best Sports Video Game of 2005 from X-Play. In 2013, it ranked 4th on “Best sports video games” compiled by the sports channel ESPN.

3. R.B.I. Baseball 18

R.B.I. Baseball 18 is what you need if you’re looking for a licensed, recently released baseball game for the PC. The game was developed by MLB’s in-house studios, called MLB Advanced Media Division.

However, don’t expect various gameplay modes and complicated controls. It’s a simple game with simplified controls. But if it’s recognizable faces that you’re looking for in a baseball game, then R.B.I. Baseball 18 is all you need.

The graphics are modern and crisp. You can easily pick your favorite players out of a crowd without any difficulty knowing their faces. In fact, the players’ real pictures are used in menus and tables. The newly introduced ‘Franchise’ mode is a sort of manager’s mode, which allows you to make trades and sign agents.

The Player Progression System allows you to create a personalized character and then follow his journey – through his career until retirement. R.B.I. Baseball 18 also features local as well as online multiplayer, including co-op and PvP.

One of the most interesting features of this game is the roster update, which reflects all real-life changes or updates to the sport. As such, if a player changes his team in real life, the change will be reflected in the game!

I wouldn’t call this game ‘well-received.’ In fact, most reviews lean on the negative side of the spectrum. However, it’s your only option when looking for a modern, licensed baseball game. It’s priced at $30, but you can get it for as low as $10.

4. Out of the Park Baseball 19

Out of the Park Baseball 19 is a game that’s very different from all other baseball simulators out there. You don’t actually play the game from a player’s perspective.

Instead, it’s a management game that you play with text commands. Making wise decisions that benefit your team and lead them to victory is the goal.

But don’t be fooled – it’s not some spare-time-game that you can jump in and out of. It requires dedication and, as a reward, offers complex insight into running a team for real. The latest edition of the game features various improvements over its predecessors, including better-looking player models that can execute all the sport activities. The AI has also been improved and can now perform various complicated tricks.

Out of the Park Baseball is the only PC exclusive baseball game. With high ratings by both critics and players, it’s priced at a fair $40 – but you can get it for much lower, if you keep an eye out for price drops.

There are many new features for Out of the Park Baseball 19. For example, the aesthetics of the stadium, as well as lighting, have been revamped. The character animations have also been improved and can now perform actions such as running, throwing, and pitching.

A few other improvements are the inclusion of 19 custom tournaments, new stats for the pitcher, control over substituting injured players, and much more.
